It may be 2018 but the unicorn phase isn’t over yet.
Now Mr Kipling has jumped on the trend; launching new multi-coloured Unicorn Slices.
The vanilla-flavoured cakes resemble the company’s famous Angel Slices but have purple icing instead of pink, and feature a yellow swirl in the shape of a unicorn horn.
They can only be found in one supermarket – and that’s ASDA, where they’re selling for £1 for six in a box – however they will be launching in Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores from March.
Despite being modelled off the Angel Cakes, the Unicorn Slices are a little bit smaller than the original, at 30g per cake instead of 33g.
Spokeswoman Karmel Maletta says the brand knew unicorns were ‘one of the biggest consumer trends for 2017, with home furnishings, beauty, food and fashion all being brandished across social media’.
And she’s right – over the space of 2017 we saw many unicorn inspired items.
Karmel continued: ‘We know consumers will be attracted to the stand out packaging and be curious to try something that they’ve never seen or tasted before. Mr Kipling’s strength is in small cakes, so pairing this with something fun like unicorn slices, we think will be a big hit with consumers.’
Personally, we love the cake idea – but we’re a bit over the whole unicorn thing now. Isn’t it time we moved on to obsessing about some other mythical creature? Centaurs, anyone?
