The internet exploded earlier today with the arrival of the trailer for the fourth Avengers film, which we now know is titled Avengers: Endgame.
As you can imagine, its a pretty gloomy two minutes and twenty five seconds, giving us a glimpse of life after Thanos devastating victory at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
Like all good trailers, however, this first look at Endgame is shrouded in mystery, leaving us with the following big questions…
Does Iron Man make it?
The clip opens with Tony Stark seemingly stranded in space with no chance of rescue, leaving a heartbreaking message to Pepper Potts as he anticipates his death. This could, of course, all be a tease and Tony is saved at the last minute. But what if it isnt?
The rest of the trailer doesnt really involve Iron Man, as Captain America and Black Widow are at the Avengers HQ on Earth. Internet theories and leaked set pictures suggest time travel is involved, but will present day Tony be one of the travellers? Do we get Tonys heartbreaking death scene at the opening of the film, before Steve Rogers goes back in time to fight alongside an earlier version of his former rival?
It would certainly be a hell of a way to kick off this decisive instalment.
One of the biggest names missing was Tessa Thompsons Valkyrie, who neither featured nor was mentioned in Infinity War.
Thats not necessarily a big thing on the surface (the character notoriously preferred to work alone), but director Joe Russo confirmed in an Reddit Q&A earlier this year that the character survived.
Furthermore, Thompson has been seen in Atlanta filming for the fourth Avengers instalment, so it stands to reason we should be seeing her at some point. The question is, what part will she play in the fight?
Stay with us on this one.
Yes, Steve Rogers having a shave doesnt necessarily mean an awful lot in the grand scheme of things, does aesthetically it may speak to where the character is going.
Civil War saw Steve Rogers break away from the government he served so loyally, in order to fight for what he felt was right. His role as an outcast manifested itself through his outfit – a darker uniform, and of course a fetching beard. However, with half the world gone, old rivalries must surely be put aside, and the visual change represents Steve Rogers having to become a leader, a symbol of hope – he has to become Captain America again. Either that, or razors are really hard to come by when youre on the run.
Hawkeye becomes Ronin?
One of the big reveals was Jeremy Renners Hawkeye, sporting a very different look to what we remember.
Many have speculated that this next film would eventually see him become Ronin, a darker evolution of the Hawkeye character. But what would drive him to such a change?
We were introduced to Clint Barton/Hawkeyes family in Avengers: Age of Ultron – could Thanos have claimed the lives of his wife, his kids, or all of them, and forced Clint Barton out of retirement?
It would be a huge motivation for the character, who has often been on the fringes of the group, and a welcome boost to the depleted Avengers.
How did Ant-Man escape the Quantum Realm?
The trailer ends on a moment of levity, with Scott Lang/Ant-man buzzing the front door of the Avengers headquarters, wanting to talk to the team.
While mainly serving as a comedy character thus far, its believed the Quantum Realm explored in the Ant-man films holds the key to the Avengers being able to save (half) the world.
The only question is, how did Lang escape? The credits scene of Ant-man and The Wasp saw Laing stuck in the Quantum Realm after Hope (Evangeline Lily), Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) all disintegrated.
On the plus side, if Lang can get out then presumably he can figure out how to get the rest of the Avengers in.
