There is a lot of tragedy over in Coronation Street as the new year gets off to a grim start – a third death has been confirmed as local cafe owner Roy Cropper will get the devastating news that his mum Sylvia is dead.
The passing of Sylvia, who was played by Stephanie Cole for two years until her exit in 2013, is the third confirmed death in the show as 2019 commences, with con man Lewis Archer set to bite the dust in the new year and an unconfirmed character also set to meet a grisly end when the factory roof caves in.
Roy will get the upsetting phone call informing him that his acid tongued mother, who he had a turbulent relationship with to say the least, has died and it will trigger some emotional scenes for the conflicted local.

Many fans had often hoped that Stephanie would one day reprise her role as the busybody but this draws a final line under the character. What this means for Roy moving forward remains to be seen – lets hope that his friends such as Carla Connor, Tyrone Dobbs and Evelyn Plummer might be there to support him through the difficult turn of events.
Elsewhere, similar news is in store for Audrey Roberts when her partner Lewis unexpectedly dies although the circumstances around his demise – and whether he will betray Audrey – remain to be seen. She will be shocked to learn that the money Archie Shuttleworth left her has been snatched – but is Lewis the culprit.
Later on in the year, disaster will strike at Underworld when the roof collapses and someone is killed – and it turns out that far from being a freak accident, the disaster is a deliberate act courtesy of an established character being taken down a much more villainous route.
It seems like Corrie is a pretty fatal place to be in 2019!
