Australia suffered the indignity of its first follow-on in 150 Tests on a dismal day at the SCG, which was interrupted due to drizzle and bad light.

After the start of play was delayed by almost four hours, the hosts were bowled out for 300 before tea, trailing India by 322 runs in the first innings.

India captain Virat Kohli enforced the follow-on — the first time Australia has been made to bat again since Trent Bridge in 2005, and the first time it has happened at home since 1988 against England.

The second innings was not given much chance to mature, as bad light stopped play after four overs at 3:42pm and tea was called early, and with conditions failing to improve, the day's play was called off.

Usman Khawaja and Marcus Harris will resume in the morning on 0-6.

Australia's first innings resumed on 6-236, with India taking the new ball and Mohammed Shami dismissing Pat Cummins (25) in his first over of the day with a ball that kept low and uprooted the off stump.

Peter Handscomb (37) was the next to have his castle toppled, catching an inside edge from Jasprit Bumrah's bowling, which careened into his pads and then the stumps.

Nathan Lyon struggled in the few balls he faced against Kuldeep Yadav and fell for a duck, before Mitchell Starc (29) and Josh Hazlewood (21) offered some cavalier batting at the death to boost Australia's total.

A shot from the side of a bunch of stewards dragging the covers on to the pitch.

Kuldeep was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 5-99.

With a reduced timeframe in which to push for victory, the obvious option was for Kohli to make Australia bat again, and he took it.

India was unable to make inroads in the four overs they bowled to the Aussie openers, as the umpires took the players off after Harris was hit on the gloves by a Bumrah bouncer.
