A new short film about the murder of James Bulger has caused controversy online and with his parents.

Denise Fergus, Jamess mother, spoke out against Detainment, which looks at the interviews that helped catch killers John Venables and Robert Thompson.

The 30 minute film uses actors to dramatise transcripts and records from that fateful event in 1993.

Fergus believes, however, that it tries to humanise the Venables and Thompson, and that it should be exempt from award nominations.

Its currently nominated for an Oscar, but Fergus says that since she was not contacted for approval before the film went ahead, it should be removed from the list.

The piece has currently won a number of awards, from Cannes to Krakow.

The judges at the Academy Awards said We, the jury, had a hard time sitting through the entire duration of this film which might give you some indication as to how difficult it is to watch.
