“On the basis of extensive analysis, the Government has concluded that it is almost certain that Russian actors sought to interfere in the 2019 General Election through the online amplification of illicitly acquired and leaked Government documents,” he said in a written statement.
British intelligence agencies have been investigating a leak of documents pertaining to Britains Free Trade Agreement with the United States ahead of the General Election in 2019.
“Sensitive Government documents relating to the UK-U.S. Free Trade Agreement were illicitly acquired before the 2019 General Election and disseminated online via the social media platform Reddit,” said Raab.
The 451-page dossier of official emails was subsequently used by the Labour party in the election campaign.
Jeremy Corbyn, the then Labour leader, said the dossier showed the National Health Service (NHS) “was on the table” in trade talks with the United States.
“Whilst there is no evidence of a broad spectrum Russian campaign against the General Election, any attempt to interfere in our democratic processes is completely unacceptable,” said Raab in the statement.
There is an ongoing criminal investigation and the government “reserves the right to respond with appropriate measures in the future,” he said.
The UK also joined the United States and Canada on Thursday in accusing Russia of trying to steal information from researchers seeking a vaccine for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus, commonly known as coronavirus.
In response to reports of Russian hackers targeting UK vaccine researchers, the Labour party said, “The reported actions of the Russian Intelligence Services are wrong and should be condemned.”
