MLK Day Celebrated In DC with Parades, Volunteerism, And Music

More than 120 organizations and individuals will join the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Peace March and Parade in the nation’s capital on Monday.

Washington residents are honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Monday by giving back to their communities, marching for peace and justice, reflecting on the civil rights leader’s journey in the District and more.

MLK Memorial

Many people are expected to stop by the MLK memorial along the National Mall in southwest DC to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Tributes will continue with a wreath laying ceremony at 9 a.m.

More than 120 organizations and individuals will join the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Peace March and Parade in the nation’s capital on Monday.

Gathering around the theme of 2023 to “catch up the dream”, a parade with floats, dance teams and activists will leave the R.I.S.E. Center in St. Elizabeth’s at 11 a.m. m., led by participants in a walk for peace.

Mayor Muriel Bowser will also participate in the event.

Legacy of Dr. Martin

“Today we are going to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in great style,” emphasized organizer Stuart Anderson.

There will also be a Health and Wellness Fair in the parking lot near 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is often said to be a busy day as people across the country follow King’s exhortation to serve the community. One such call is carved into the stone of the south wall of the MLK memorial in DC.

“Make a career in humanity. Commit to the noble fight for equal rights. You will make of yourself a better person, a greater nation of your country and a better world to live in ”, reads the quote.

Throughout the DMV, community members will come together to clean up parks and trails, pack care packages for neighbors in need, and more. These are the events you can join.

The Kennedy Center is hosting a musical tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. with Leslie Odom Jr. on the Millennium Stage. The “Let Freedom Ring” ticket drawing begins Monday at 4:30 p.m. before the show at 6 p.m.
